America has been at war with drugs for almost a century. After Richard Nixon, America has gone through three different presidents who all waged a war against drugs. However despite much effort, it is a war that America is losing and should finally put to rest. More than half the prisoners in federal prison are imprisoned for drug related offenses. But drug dealers are still as prevalent as ever and it seems that once America busts one drug case five more come up. If we continue this War on Drugs then we are just going to end up representing more than 50% of the world's prisoners. The War on Drugs may not seem like a big issue now, but it will especially impact our future generations to come. This war must stop now because if America keeps on continuing this, we are only going to hurt our government economically.
The government has spent one trillion dollars on this cause in the effort of trying to get the drug supply to decrease but that seems to be doing no good. Of that money, taxpayers are paying billions of dollars. However, America has nothing to show for it except that 2.3 million people are now behind bars, and of that 2.3 million, 25 percent of those people are in there for drug related offenses. Although America has triple the amount of prisoners in jail, drugs are still as accessible, if not more, than the day that the Drug War was declared. So why do Americans keep on paying all of these taxes just to see no change in the drug war?
Not only is War on Drugs impacting our economy now through taxes but it is also going to impact our society's economy in the long run. Because of this War on Drugs, the government is now making young people, especially those of color in their mid-20s unemployable. The reason is because now these convicts have a high-level misdemeanor or felony on their record when all they did was commit a nonviolent crime and now when they apply for jobs, they have to check that they were in fact imprisoned for a felony, and now companies will not want to hire them. This is one big issue that America is not thinking about when they are pushing to continue the War on Drugs.
America needs to end this War on Drugs now. By continuing this War we are only hurting ourselves and our future generations to come. America is making many young adults unemployable even though they committed simple non-violent crimes and we are also just making taxpayers put all of this money towards a cause that is not getting better anytime soon. We need to end this War and focus on the real important issue, incarcerating those who have committed violent crimes and pose a threat to society.
